Folk artist Dietrich Strause was raised on pretzels and Rolling Rock. As an impressionable young musician, Dietrich played trumpet in a rock and soul outfit that catered to the finest of southern Lancaster County boat clubs and biker establishments.  It was with this group that Dietrich, a clean-cut classical horn player, started to develop an appreciation for the popular song and began writing songs of his own.

After graduating from Oberlin College in 2008, Dietrich grew a beard and moved to Boston to immerse himself in the rich New England roots-music and folk community. Dietrich self-produced his first album with friend Hassan Ali Estakhrian (The Trey Alexander Band). Two of the more intimate songs on the record, “Jean Louise” and “Susquehanna” were recorded in a studio in Somerville, Massachusetts.

P. Bradley Robb, Editor-in-Chief of Subter Magazine, says about the record, “Dietrich’s record is sparse, showing a very deft touch, which often drifts towards the ethereal or haunted. For a man so young, the only reasonable explanation is a singer-songwriter steeped in duende. And it’s an album that perfectly captures Lancaster, Pennsylvania - a city with equal numbers of churches, bars, and art galleries. Dietrich Strause’s self-titled debut is a brilliant construct.”

When Dietrich isn’t out promoting his own record, he’s playing trumpet with other Cambridge/Somerville songwriters and bands.  And during the day, you can find him walking dogs to help pay the bills.
